Sunbox donates 3 solar units in Wanaleia Children´s Home in Kenya

“Since we have Sunbox in our center, children have never had dinner in the dark and, more importantly, can study at home and with enough light, which will certainly have important impacts on their academic performance"

“During the week, it is common being 3 to 4 days without electricity. Before Sunbox, we had to rely on candles and kerosene lamps, which is dangerous”

“, the Sunbox have greatly helped our local staff to charge their mobile phones so that they always have a way to communicate with us in Portugal or, for example, to call emergency medical services if necessary. “

“The cell phone is for them an important working tool and a house where there are 27 children, should always be "connected" to the world.”

Full story:

The Shelter Wanalea (Wanalea Children's Home) is located in Ongata Rongai, near Kwara slum on the outskirts of Nairobi. The center houses at present 27 orphan children drawn from the slums of Nairobi and rural poor, remote areas, thus having reached its maximum capacity.

Victims of HIV / AIDS (some of them are HIV positive), the post-electoral conflicts of 2008, or from neglect, exploitation and abuse, children living in the center, where they found a true family, and where they receive, in addition to food, health care and counseling until they are 18 years of age.

The children go to school outside of the center in a Kenyan school official called Thorn Three School.

The Shelter Wanalea was recognized by the Government of Kenya (Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development) as Charitable Children's Institution, having been distinguished by high standards and quality of care and services offered to resident children. In June 2011, legal custody of the children was officially handed over to the juvenile court institution in Kenya.

Among the many challenges facing this small orphanage, we noted the frequent electricity cutts in the Ongata Rongai region. During the week, it is frequent to have 3 to 4 days without electricity.

Before having Sunbox, we had to rely on candles and kerosene lamps, which is dangerous, and about a year and a half ago we had a fire that destroyed a part of the house. Fortunately no one was hurt but the damage exceeded 3.500 Euros ...

The children from the center return from school at around 5 pm. Have dinner, bathe and do their homework. By then it gets dark. Since we have Sunbox in our center, children have never again had dinner in the dark and, more importantly, can study at home with enough light, which will certainly have important impact on their academic performance.

Besides providing light to our Center and to the lives of our children in these dark nights, the Sunbox have greatly helped our local staff to carry mobile phones so that they always have a way to communicate with us in Portugal or, for example, to call emergency medical services if necessary. The cell phone is for them an important working tool and a house where there are 27 children, should always be "connected" to the world.
